After long consideration, we have taken the decision to leave Sweden. This might come as a surprise to some of you, however, it has been in our minds for the last few months. So, after 4 years in this Northern land, we are setting sail and moving on with our lives. In this article, we want to enlighten you on why we decided to leave this country and what’s waiting for us next.
Why are we leaving Sweden?
To start with, it has been more than 4 years that we call Sweden our home. After coming here to do our Masters, we didn’t really plan to stay this long. But as always, things just worked out this way. We got jobs, moved to Stockholm, and got comfortable here. Yet, somehow we were never fully happy in this country. Firstly, because we never managed to find a dream job. As a foreigner, the competition in the job market is fierce, so you grab any office job you can. Even if it’s not fully to your liking or not even in your industry. Secondly, because we never really felt integrated here. Even if everyone is polite and speaks perfect English, it’s close to impossible to get into a circle of Swedish friends. Thus, no matter how hard you try you never going to be one of ”them”.
However, the most important reason for leaving Sweden was a desire to travel. More than a year ago, we decided to take a gap year and go explore the wide world. Southeast Asia, to be more specific. We planned it all, saved up the cash, even bought some necessary gear… However, then you know what happened and our plans got shattered. The dream of becoming a travel writer and enjoying a digital nomad life started to fade. With every passing month, we were hoping that things will go back to normal fast, yet they didn’t. So, at the end of the day, everything was set to leave Sweden, however, the original plan could no longer take place.
What are we going to do next?
Despite the extreme change in the current global situation, we decided to go through with our plan of leaving Sweden. Even if our life is uncertain or this might not seem like the wisest decision for most. However, at the end of the month, we are packing our belonging to a van and are leaving Sweden behind. Then, we are most likely hopping on a flight to France where we gonna spent some quality time with Hélo’s family.
That is all that we know for now. These are the times that we live in, where you can’t plan more than a couple of weeks at a time. Though, our intention in a longer perspective is still to take some time off and go on some adventures. Be it in France, somewhere else in Europe, or even in another continent. Our explorer spirit was not killed and we will do something really cool with the time that we’ll have at our hands. So, make sure to follow along!
In the last 4 years, we have grown as people and Sweden was a big part of that. The unique working culture, attitude towards nature, healthy lifestyle, and much more are the key characteristics of Sweden. I can say for certain, that we took a bit of everything and our time here was great. We wouldn’t trade it for anything else. However, the moment to move on has come and we will try to achieve our goals somewhere else. I’m sure we will write articles, in which we will reflect on our time in Sweden in more depth. Though, for now, we just wanted to update you on our big life change. Hope to share stories with you soon! Just from another country…
