Another weekend, another camping! As we have spent a good chunk of the summer in Stockholm, we still wanted to make the most out of our time here. Camping around Stockholm is easy and cheap, but there is not so much information about places to camp at. So after quite some research, we decided to head to Stockholm’s Archipelago and so we went camping in Nåttaro! In this article, we will give you insights on this island, how to get there, and the prices of everything on the island!
Going to Nåttarö
From Stockholm city center, going to Nåttarö is fairly simple and straight forward. We took the commuter train (pendeltåg) from Stockholm City and got off in Nynäshamn, the last stop of the line. From the pendeltåg station, it is a short 5 minutes walk to the pier where boats to the archipelago are leaving. There was quite some queue but still manage to get onboard the Utö Express. The ride from Nynäshamn to Nåttarö is about 25 minutes.
The ferry is operated by Waxholmsbolaget, and tickets are bought on board. There is no need to pre-book a ticket or seat, you just go on the pier and get in the queue. The ticket to Nåttarö costs 93 SEK or 62 SEK (discounted), one way. Onboard, you’ll find luggage space, a bar, and bathrooms. Taking the ferry during the COVID time feels very safe, there are not too many people on board, plenty of space between seats and sanitizing gel everywhere.
Once on the island, there is no car, but if you have a lot of luggage you can get a trolley to carry your belongings to your cabin/tent, etc.
Camping in Nåttarö
Camping in Nåttarö is an amazing experience. Even if you are just beginners at camping, you will love it! When arriving on the island, head to the cottage called “expedition”. This is the place where you can rent bikes, get information about the island, but this is also where you will get the keys of your cottage or pay for your tent space. It costs 60 SEK for a tent (max 4 persons) per night.
You are free to choose where to camp on the island. And here is the trick! We saw the large tent field when arriving and thought it was the only place to camp. Therefore this is where we have set our camp for the night. But you can actually camp anywhere on the island!! We highly recommend, not to go on the field, but rather towards the beach of Stora Sand (photos below). There is plenty of space there for camping, as well as some grills, and toilets. This area is very calm and quiet at night, people coming for the day usually leave the beach around 17.00 or 18.00. After this, the beach is yours! And what’s better than falling asleep to the sound of waves?
The camp field is also good of course, but it was quite busy… We enjoyed there having access to the water, but in the future, we would rather stop there with a large container for water and then set camp in StorSand or Skarsand (the other beach).
Things to do in Nåttarö
Nåttarö is a very small island. You can easily walk from North to South, or from West to East. The beaches are mostly on the East side of the island, where you’ll get sun there all day long until at least 18.00 in the summer. Going to Stora Sand beach was our favorite thing. It is one of the very few white sand beaches in the Stockholm area, and the water, though cold, is crystal clear!
However, if staying on the beach all day long, is not something for you, you may want to walk around the island, head to the Drottninggrottan (the queen’s cave (very small), but if you’re into this, you should check it out), or enjoy walking in the nature reserve. The trees and bushes are keeping the area cool and mostly in the shade all day long. You can also rent some sports equipment: kayaking around the island is an amazing way of discovering the archipelago! There is also an underwater trail if you like snorkeling!
You’ll find different barbecue spots and grill scattered on the island. And this has been one of our favorite activities to warm up in the evening. And since there are not too many people staying overnight, you might even be able to find your own grill. If grilling is not your thing though, Nåttarö is also home to a nice small restaurant, where you can easily go for a meal (quite pricy) or for a coffee! There are long opening hours, and it is a great place to have some traditional Swedish food.
