Stockholm and around… When traveling or visiting Stockholm, we tend to focus on the inner city, the main islands, and we forget about all the beautiful places around. In today’s article, we wanted to introduce you to a hidden gem located nearby Stockholm: the city of Mariefred! You might have heard or seen Mariefred’s castle in some photos or commercials, but let us tell you more about it! In this article, we will cover all the main questions you may have: how to get there, what to do, or why you should go there. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
Mariefred has always been on our list of things we need to visit in Sweden. Not really sure why, but it is a city we really wanted to go to, and it is also really close to Stockholm! However, after visiting Sigtuna, we were afraid that both cities would be kind of the same and therefore the day trip to Mariefred would not be super interesting. And we were wrong! While there are a lot of similarities between the two cities, we discovered a lot of great things that Mariefred has compared to Sigtuna!
We decided to go to Mariefred for the afternoon as it is close to Stockholm, unfortunately, it’s been raining the whole time… Which is a risk we were ready to take when going on a day trip in the Swedish autumn! However, the good thing about this rainy day is that we’ve had the whole place to ourselves!
Why you should go there?
Let’s start this article by the most natural question – why should I go there? Is it really worth it? And our answer to that is yes. Yes, it is worth it and even more off-season.
First of all, it is worth mentioning that Mariefred is a small city, where most things you’ll see and do are outdoors. The rain did not stop us from seeing all we wanted and with an umbrella, everything was fine! But if you get to pick a day, a nice and sunny day will of course be nicer (logical no?!).
Next, Mariefred is a nice city to visit if you are a bit sick of Stockholm and your usual walk along Strandvägen. It is not far away from the city and easily accessible. The perfect little gateway for a day or even just an afternoon. Mariefred is far enough to be different from Stockholm but close enough for spending only a few hours. Perfect, no?!
It is an awesome place if you are looking for a nice autumn activity. Even with (young) kids. There are few cars in the city, a lot of walking paths along the lake, cafés, restaurants or picnic areas, you’ll find something for your taste. And maybe it is also worth mentioning that you can go from a place to another walking. Going from the city center to the castle might take you only a few minutes walking!
So, is Mariefred a true hidden gem? Our answer is yes! It is not as crowded as Sigtuna can be, the city is also a little bit bigger, with different things to do and a lot to see regardless of the season!
What to do in Mariefred?
So, as mention earlier, Mariefred is a fairly small town. However, I am sure you’ll find a few things to do there! Starting with walking around the city center. We have loved walking around the city center, exploring small alleys, walking by the colorful houses, and stopping whenever we wanted for a nice cup of tea!
Another great, and obvious thing to do is to explore the Gripsholm castle. The famous Mariefred castle! At the time we went there, it was soon closing and therefore we have not been inside. But you can surely visit it! If you’re not into the castle and this type of visit, we still encourage you to walk around the castle. The building is really beautiful and the park around is worth a visit. We really enjoyed the peacefulness of the park, garden, and there is also a greenhouse nearby with a lot of flowers! I am sure this place is stunning during the autumn month when all the leaves turn red and orange!
Next on your list should be the train station, which seems to come from a kid’s playroom! You cannot miss the yellow building and narrow tracks in the city. From the lakeside, they will guide you to the station. There, you can observe wagons carrying woods, or even passengers! If we would have known about this, we would have certainly checked the timetable and hopped on for a short ride!
How to get to Mariefred?
There are a few options to get to Mariefred. The easiest and fastest is to go by car. All the way on the highway from Stockholm, it will take you less than one hour door to door. And it is worth mentioning that parking in the center of Mariefred was free.
The next option is to use public transport. Not sure how fast this will be (probably a little over an hour), but it is for sure a possibility if you don’t have a car or don’t want to rent one. To use public transport, you’ll need to hop on a train in the central station and later on change for a local bus. As Mariefred is not in Stockholm county, your local SL card will not work to take you all the way there.
Lastly, and for sure the most scenic option, is to go to Mariefred using a steamboat. I mean… can it get any better than this? The cruise on lake Mälaren is guided and will take you all the way to the beautiful city of Mariefred for roughly 50€ (495 SEK). Cruising on the lake is not the fastest way to get there, but how nice is it to enjoy a scenic ride?!
