A few weeks ago, we decided it was time to get out of the house and explore our surroundings. With the coronavirus still going on, we have not left the Stockholm area at all. But we wanted to explore something new, or something different than the city center of Stockholm. I need to admit that we are very lucky to live in Sweden as wherever we go, the landscapes are beautiful. We have decided to combine two great excursions around Stockholm: Björnö and Artipelag! While we knew Björnö from our visit there last year, Artipelag was something we have heard of but never went to see for ourselves. So, let’s dive in!
Traveling in and around Stockholm is super easy! Which is why we really encourage you to discover the region. For these excursions around Stockholm we have chosen to rent a car* for the day, but note that you can easily go to both places using public transport!
Artipelag is a unique place nearby Stockholm. One of the first gateways to the archipelago, located in the area of Värmdö. It took us a short 20-minutes drive from the center of Stockholm to get there, and not only the drive is easy but it also shows the true beauty of the Swedish nature in the archipelago. Artipelag is an open-air art museum, with great access to the sea, walking paths in the nearby park and forest as well as an indoor art museum.
While the art museum was closed due to the coronavirus, the outdoors were open for visitors. The entrance is free of charge and you’ll find a café on-site where you can easily grab lunch or fika!
We have really enjoyed discovering this place as not only it is quite different from other parks or museums, but we also got to spend time outdoors. We loved the peacefulness of the place, the rooftop terrace where herbs are cultivated and the amazing view we got to enjoy from up there! You can freely walk around the park, discover amazing artwork and statues scattered in the area. This is a great place for excursions around Stockholm if you want to get out of the city, enjoy a relaxing moment outside while being in the archipelago.
From Artipelag, we made our way to Björnö. It took us about 20 minutes to get there by car, but you can also get there by public transport from Stockholm. If you remember, we went to this nature reserve a while ago – when it was still cold! Björnö is a place we really liked the first time. But, since we were there during the winter months, we wanted to discover it in the summer too.
It is always very interesting to see how different places look from winter to summer, and oh boy, we were not disappointed! Björnö in the summer is a must-see around Stockholm. The sun was shining and we got to climb on some rocks, walk along a sandy beach by the sea and cross the forest, in a single place.
We love Björnö as it is a good gateway to the archipelago, a peaceful and quiet place. A place where you can enjoy a nice picnic, stay overnight camping, or simply come for a day trip! There are a few paths you can follow which will take you all over the reserve.
We hope you got to discover some new places in today’s article! We really enjoy traveling around, and when going abroad is not an option, we actually discovered another form of travel! Stockholm’s region is absolutely stunning. If you get the chance, spend some time discovering it!
* Rent a car for a day: we are using Aimo cars in Stockholm for most of our day trips, use the code YJGKVLTX for 149 SEK off your first ride.
