There are a few things that I enjoy writing about. These 6-months reviews are one of them! January is almost over (already), and we have been celebrating our 2 years in Stockholm just a couple of days ago! So, for this week, there is no better article than this 24-Months living in Stockholm review!
As you might know, every month we sit down and write a bit about what happened over the last 30-ish days. We take the time to reflect on what has been good, what we achieved and what we want to do next. We also spend time thinking about the things that made us feel uncomfortable, insecure or what we think we “failed” at achieving.
Living abroad is far from being always good and perfect. These reviews aim to keep track of our progress, to look at the long term goals and what brightens our days. We want to share with you our experiences as young professionals, living abroad and loving trips and local adventures.
The last review ended in July, so here we are, still enjoying the summer and long days here in Stockholm. August was busy since I (Héloïse) started a new job at the end of July. This means, creating a new routine, getting used to new things and so on. I am very happy with this change and also happened to cut by half my commuting time!
I August I took Erikas on a ‘culture trip’! After going to his home in Vilnius in June, we went to France in August. He experienced quite a few things and talked about it here. We visited so many places and published a few articles and itineraries about our time there.
We also took the chance in August to spend time walking around the city, enjoying terraces, long summer nights and swimming sessions at the beach close by our apartment. In August we also tried to look a bit at our travelling plan, where to go, what to see and how often. We like to go somewhere every other month as it is a good thing to look forward to. But due to my new job, I could not plan so much…. Imagine my disappointment!
September was, to our biggest surprise, much colder than anticipated. And not only it got much colder, but it went by unexpectedly and early. In September, we could feel that summer was over and that autumn was settling in.
But I really like this period of the year as it gets cosier and the days are not too short yet. We still had the time to do sports and come home before sunset or just go for a nice walk after work. The trees were still very green so only the temperatures dropped.
In September, we also took the time to think about Christmas break, what and how we want to do it. Erikas will be travelling in the North of Sweden with his family while I will be going back to France for a few days. We also started to think about later vacations and things we want to do. This is mostly talking about where we want to travel! Once again, we made a shortlist of places we want to go to and we will look at tickets for these. The cheapest (as usual) will win! If you wonder how we manage to travel often, we recommend you read this.
And before I forget, once again, September happened to fly by extremely fast! When looking back at it we wondered, what did we do?! It felt like we did not do anything at all! But yes, we took some time off to think about what we wanted to do and also fixing the blog, previous articles and so on! Pretty much we did all the “behind the scenes” work!
But of course, we did not only work! It was also Erikas’s birthday and so we spent some quality time out and we’ve been to restaurants we’ve never been to before. It was really good and it feels amazing to treat ourselves sometimes. Since we don’t eat out at fancier places often, we appreciate these little outings!
24 months living in Stockholm, and here we go October!
October offered the best weather we could dream of! Of course, it has been raining a bit, but we mostly got sunny days and despite the cold, we’ve been able to get out, walk around and enjoy the beautiful colours. Parks and islands in Stockholm turned orange and red which made the city so pretty. We tried to discover new cafés and restaurants, and enjoy being with friends in nice places! October flew by so fast but now, at the end of the month, it feels like it’s been an extremely nice and enjoyable month.
In October, Erikas went for a weekend trip to Northern Croatia – and he wrote a full itinerary about his favourite places there. On my end, I stayed in Stockholm the whole time, but did not feel grounded at all!! I spent time enjoying the city and wrote a ton about great things to do over here!
Now that the month is over – or soon to be – I am still not very excited about November coming. We can feel that days are colder and much darker too. It is not the funniest situation, but we need to go through anyways!
As every year, I was not very enthusiastic about November. The weather is usually terrible, wet and cold but not snowy… Little did we know that when I am finishing this article in January, we still did not get any snow!
At the beginning of the month, I flew back to Brittany for a family reunion and enjoyed a long weekend there. It was very interesting for me to go home so many times this year as it is quite unusual! And don’t get me wrong, it is nice to spend time back home, but the travelling part is always quite long.
Also, beginning of November, Erikas changed job. We kinda had to implement a new routine and new habits. That way we could both perform at work, keep on doing our side-activities and hobbies and many more. At the same time, we felt that both of our jobs were more demanding (for various reasons) and the rest of November would be an interesting ride!
In November, I also went to Helsinki for a weekend to meet some friends! From there, we spent a day in Tallinn, Estonia, where I never went before – and loved this city! The food, culture and architecture are really interesting and it is amazing to discover a (new) city for a day. It is now on my list and I want to go back there – or maybe it is time for a Baltic-tour?!
We have not written nor posted anything for the whole month of December. Whether it was on the blog, Instagram or anywhere… December, has been a bit difficult for us and we have been extremely busy at work and we have had no energy left to write on the blog.
Also, the weather was far from being great and probably we were also a bit depressed by this. All in all, we have had other priorities than the blog to focus on and after writing every week for a year, we needed some kind of a break! 🙂
Holidays-wise, Erikas spent a little over a week with his family in Dalarna. It is a region in the North-West of Sweden, close to the Norwegian border. We are sharing a lot of these photos on our Instagram and we are planning on sharing more details and an itinerary on the blog shortly.
On my side, I did not get any days off, but I have been able to work from home for a couple of days! So I went back to France to spend the holidays with my family. Then, I flew back to Stockholm before the New Year. We celebrated 2020 together here in Stockholm with some of our friends – and it was a great party!
Happy New Year! I am also going to use this article to wish you all a great 2020! May all your dreams come true, and hope this year will be filled with love, good health and many projects!
On our side, January started strong as Erikas went back to work (and I kept going to work). We have not had any time to sit down and work on the blog, nor our Instagram. I started to publish photos on our feed only after mid-January and I need to admit that I have missed it!
Both of us have been super busy at work and stressed out. And though we did not have any new resolutions for the year, we decided to sign up for the gym! It does keep us busy and we do need to organize ourselves a bit more. But, it is needless to say, that we do feel a lot better (and also a bit stronger!). We are also trying on getting our work-life balance back so we can work and focus on side projects, as well as future travels.
In January we have not been anywhere, and the next time we’re off will be Mid-February. We are slowly discovering more of Sweden and we do want to make the most of it – even it is only for a weekend excursion. Blog-wise, we will probably not publish new article every Sunday as it requires a lot of work and we don’t have the time for it just yet. Hopefully, we can publish something every other weekend!
